Residents are planning to take club bosses to court to force them to be quieter.

People living in the Brighton's busiest night time streets say they are so frustrated that nothing is being done about the all night racket coming from nightclubs they are taking matters into their own hands.

They are planning to use Section 82 of the Environmental Protection Act to take city clubs to court.

If they can persuade magistrates that particular clubs are causing a nuisance the venues could be fined up to £5,000 and ordered to quieten down.

At a public meeting of Brighton Old Town Local Action Team Councillor Jason Kitkat said they would be the first residents in the city desperate enough to take this measure and that it was “very disappointing” it had got to this point.

During the meeting residents described how they were forced to spend weekends away from their homes and in some cases were actually made ill by the sleepless nights.

Residents say they are increasingly frustrated by the failure of the council and Sussex Police to take any action against the clubs.

As well as having music reverberating through their walls the residents also complained of large-scale bottle recycling in the early hours of the morning and partygoers playing drums and blowing hunting horns.
