Police raided a house after residents complained about drug-dealing near two city schools.

Officers arrested two men and seized cannabis in a raid in Balfour Road, Brighton, on Friday.

The move came after people living in the area said dealing was taking place on the street, yards from the entrances to Balfour Infant and Junior School and Varndean School.

Sussex Police officers said they acted on reports from the community of young people gathering either in cars or on foot waiting to buy drugs.

A force spokesman said there is no evidence that any pupils from either school had been affected or involved, and it was probably a coincidence that the suspects lived in the area.

When officers searched the house on a drugs warrant on Friday, they found ten ounces of cannabis, with a street value of up to £2,500.

Two men, aged 20 and 21, were arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply, and have been released on bail while police investigate further.

Sergeant Chris Lane, of the Hollingdean and Preston neighbourhood policing team, said: “If there is any risk that schoolchildren will witness dealing or be involved in it, that makes it top priority.

“We are very grateful to the community for their assistance and would encourage anyone with similar concerns to contact police.”

He said officers are in touch with the schools and will be contacting the residents who raised the issue to update them.

Councillor Amy Kennedy, whose Preston Park ward includes part of Balfour Road, said the area has suffered from anti-social behaviour in the past.

She said: “This is an excellent example of the community talking to the police and the police listening and responding.”
