The economy of Brighton and Hove is heading for a huge boost after a series of summer events were revealed.

Hotels, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, cafes and shops will be hoping for a host of extra business after details of the gigs and sporting shows were released yesterday.

The city will be hosting the only UK show from American skateboarding legend Tony Hawk.

Brighton and Hove City Council hopes that the skateboarding spectacular featuring a gig by Biffy Clyro will see thousands of people pack the seafront near the West Pier on Wednesday July 21.

Other professional skaters will take part and a specially-built half-pipe will be central to the event.

Singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner will be part of a charity event called @Sunset on Friday July 30 and Saturday July 31.

It is hoped about 4,000 people will attend next to the West Pier, with tickets priced at £30.

The event will be filmed for Channel Five.

Meanwhile, rugby fans are in for a treat with an event at Waterhall, just north of Brighton, from July 23-25.

It will be an international rugby sevens event with a competition of 16 teams made up of professionals plus contests for women and amateurs.

A campsite will be set up to accommodate up to 5,000 spectators and players.

A council spokesman said: “Three big events are being added to the already busy summer events calendar in Brighton and Hove.”
