Eastbourne has edged out the competition to be named the most holiday-friendly area of the UK - including its Sussex coast rival, Brighton.

Eastbourne beat Manchester into second place in a survey of the places best suited for UK holidays.

Third was Birmingham, with the Cotswolds area fourth, Leeds fifth and Bournemouth sixth.

In contrast, Wells in Somerset was considered the least holiday-friendly place, followed by the Orkney Islands, Bude in Cornwall and the Shetland Islands.

Grant Bather of Virgin Money Travel Insurance, which commissioned the survey, said: "Everyone's idea of a great holiday is different and the UK has plenty of great places to visit.

"But this year it's definitely Eastbourne for the all-round experience. For the classic seaside experience, Eastbourne wins hands down."

Each area was rated for average weather, hotel availability and cost, attraction availability and cost, restaurant availability and beach cleanliness.

What do you think? Is Eastbourne a better holiday destination than Brighton? What would be your recommendations to holidaymakers in Sussex?
