Ever had a craving for a prawn cocktail – but don’t want to pay more than a fiver?

How about finding the best deal on a plate of steak and chips? Or discovering who’s offering the most discount for vegetarians?

Diners across Brighton and Hove can find out all this and more thanks to a new “Facebook for restaurants” – the first website of its kind in the world.

Proudrestaurants.com has been set up by University of Sussex graduate Csaba Toth and is designed to help people find the perfect place to eat in Brighton and Hove.

More than 30 restaurants have so far signed up to the service, which allows users to search by cuisine, price and special offers.

Menus are updated daily by restaurant managers themselves, while diners can also book tables online.

The website has been applauded by business experts at the Sussex Innovation Centre for its potential to revolutionise the industry.

Chief executive Mike Herd said: “We can see this becoming a major success in cities across the world.”

Mr Toth, 28, founded the website after graduating with a Masters degree in International Management and working in hospitality for the past six years.

He said: “The system we have created is new and very easy to use.

“It is based on the Facebook model, allowing people to search for the dishes they feel like eating.

“You can find exactly what you want in seconds.”

Top restaurants that have joined the site include the Windsor Restaurant at the Hilton Brighton Metropole hotel and Blanch House. They pay a monthly membership fee, while the website also generates income from advertising.

Mr Toth added: “We will look to take the website to London and other cities.”
