The jury in the trial of two people accused of beating up an artist will continue to consider its verdict today.
Joel Henson, 25, was left in a deep coma after he became the victim of a series of attacks in Brighton in June last year.
He recovered after an emergency brain operation but died from a heroin overdose at a friend's house in Brighton four months later.
There was no medical evidence to link his death to the injuries he received, a jury at Hove Crown Court has been told.
Christopher Winnan, 21, of Birdham Road, Brighton, and a 17-year-old youth who cannot be named because of his age, both deny causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
They also deny alternative charges of causing grievous bodily harm and violent disorder.
The trial continues.
