So Wetherspoon’s is hoping to take over the building on the corner of Bond Street (The Argus, May 13)?
Although I suppose it is always better to see a commercial property occupied in the city centre, I doubt many Brightonians will be happy to see a big chain such as JD Wetherspoon at the entrance of one of the UK’s most popular independent shopping areas.
There is already a huge Wetherspoon’s two streets away and it would be terrible for Brighton to become yet another clone city. Areas such as The Lanes and North Laine keep Brighton unique and attract hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.
If Brighton starts to lose its quirkiness, it may soon end up looking like so many other seaside towns.
