I am sure I’m not alone in finding all this fuss about flag-waving and the World Cup really boring.

A new stadium at Falmer where you can go and watch real football on a regular basis is something to get excited about.

Watching the football on television, even if you paint your face and stick a flag on your car, is surely a bit lacking in comparison. Particularly as the England team is – if we’re honest – usually a bit disappointing, largely because it’s drawn from those premiership sides where most of the players have as much to do with the geographical area the club is named after as a polar bear.

There might be some interesting matches in South Africa but, really, the best football is where you go Saturday after Saturday, rain or shine, win, lose or draw, and not just something you wave a flag at once every four years.

So, I’m looking forward to the start of the next season, proper football, and a more realistic perspective on 90 minutes of 22 blokes kicking the little white bouncy thing into the big white stringy thing.
