Rude pranksters have given a historic monument a 20ft extension.

A giant appendage has appeared attached to the Long Man of Wilmington.

Sussex Archaeological Society, which looks after the Long Man, near Polegate, and six other historic properties, says it had been inundated with calls about the Long Man's new risque outline.

Society staff who look after the monument found the extra decoration on the grassy knoll when they arrived to check out the Long Man on Friday morning.

The Long Man's new anatomy has been painted on the grass at the monument using the same kind of line paint used on football pitches so it is not thought it will cause any lasting damage.

Popular legend suggests that prudish Victorians removed the Long Man's manhood.

However Sussex Archaeological Society said there was no evidence to suggest the story was true.

The true age of the Long Man is unknown.
