Some years ago, when the Brighton Dome was to receive its multi-million pound regeneration, I fought to save the building’s unique and magnificent dual-purpose organ. Those who were in charge at the time intended to quietly “let it go”, but I pointed out that they were throwing away a vital part of Brighton’s heritage.
They took advice and the organ was spared, totally refurbished “to its former glory” and reinstalled. But what has happened to it now? Apparently, it is being allowed to lie dormant, hardly ever seeing the light of day and fast deteriorating again, through lack of use.
The organ has a very special place in Brighton’s cultural history and it is a fantastic, unique musical instrument.
So why does the current managment of Brighton Dome never arrange any events featuring the organ?
Please can somebody explain why it is being left, once again, to rot?
