England fans may not wish to see their team’s stars walked all over by the opposition – but when it comes to what is under their own feet it is a different matter.

The 24-square-foot image of Wayne Rooney is catching the eye of shoppers in Church Road, Hove.

Jay Singleton, of Rug World, said while St George’s cross rugs had been selling well the pure wool Rooney rug has yet to attract a buyer.

With a £275 price tag, it was specially made to order in India.

Mr Singleton said: “It was an idea of one of the partners to support England.

“They have drawn an awful lot of interest from people.

“People stop and point. It is not just football fanatics, but mums going past with their pushchairs as well.”

Rooney is not the only player to be immortalised in a rug.

The shop also has a David Beckham rug – but because injury has ruled him out of the side it has not been given full prominence.
