Thousands of people are expected to head for the coast as a mini-heatwave hits Sussex this weekend.

The Met Office is forecasting long spells of sunshine over both days in Brighton and Hove with temperatures peaking at 26C on Sunday.

Moderate levels of air pollution are expected, sparking a warning for people with asthma and other breathing problems.

The hot weather could also cause problems for people with heart conditions or high blood pressure.

The city is expected to be packed with visitors on the beach or in bars around the city to watch the England World Cup match against Germany on Sunday afternoon.

Adam Bates, head of VisitBrighton, the city council's tourism arm, said: “With a good forecast like this we are expecting a very busy weekend.

“There should be a great atmosphere but we would advise people to take care when out in the sun.”

The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton says it is on standby and ready to cope with an expected rise in sunburn cases and people being admitted with breathing difficulties.
