A nightmare tenant subjected her neighbours to three months of persistent swearing, intimidation and homophobic abuse.

Shelley White’s behaviour was so bad that she has now been forced out of her home in only the second case of its kind in Brighton and Hove.

Magistrates awarded Brighton and Hove City Council a closure order on Thursday, allowing them to force their tenant out.

The court was told 35-year-old Shelley, who lived at Flat 3, 25 Dorset Gardens, in Kemptown, had even thrown glass jars containing hot oil at council workers called to deal with complaints.

White’s neighbours were asked to keep a record of her antisocial behaviour as evidence to help force her out under the Antisocial Behaviour Act.

Her neighbours said they had suffered fear, stress and lack of sleep because of the “unknown dangerous element” White created in their neighbourhood.

They said they were scared to allow their pets into their gardens because objects were regularly thrown from her windows.

Her 90-year-old neighbour said that arguments outside her front door left her scared to go out.

Another woman said she had been spat at and faced homophobic insults.

A closure order was served on White’s flat on Thursday.

Sergeant Alex Evans, of Kemptown neighbourhood policing team, said: "Antisocial behaviour has a serious impact on peoples’ lives. This sends a clear message that it will not be tolerated in the city.

“We will continue to work in partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council’s Anti- Social Behaviour team to support residents who suffer anti-social behaviour and to improve their quality of life when it has occurred."
