Many people of my generation refer to the eastern arm of Shoreham Harbour as “The Canal”. I read somewhere the reason for this is that it was the sea access end of a proposed ship canal to London that was never built.

If this is so, can anyone either give me an idea of its proposed route (especially how it would have crossed the Downs), or point me in the direction of any information about this project?
