A year ago local Conservative Cabinet member Councillor David Smith welcomed the news that more than 10,000 residents of Brighton and Hove had taken advantage of the then Government’s free swimming scheme for the over-60s and under-16s.
He said: “These are excellent figures, with high participation justifying our decision to join the scheme. It means over-60s are getting some exercise and probably socialising too. Youngsters are getting a legitimate outlet for all their energy, particularly during the holidays which can sometimes be hard to fill with meaningful activity.”
What a shame that on July 31 the Conservative-led Government and the Conservative-run council will be scrapping this popular scheme introduced by Labour.
If your elderly parents miss out on exercise, or your kids have one less legitimate outlet for their energy this summer, you know who to blame.
