A Calor gas bottle caught fire as a gardener tried to make a cup of tea.
Firefighters from Roedean were called to the allotments at Tenantry Down Road, Brighton, at about 3.30pm on Saturday.
The bottle is believed to have perished over the winter and began to leak, producing a blow-torch effect, when its owner tried to use it.
