Brighton music venue up for sale

A major music venue has been put on the market a few weeks after it closed down.

The Engine Room, in Kings Road, Brighton, shut down in mysterious circumstances last month and cancelled all upcoming events.

There was no announcement on the club's website although its MySpace site had a small notice saying that the venue, which had been up for sale, had closed and that all shows and club nights were cancelled.

Now the venue has been put on the market with a £35,000 price tag for the six years left on the leasehold.

The Engine Room is one of several Brighton and Hove venues that have struggled in recent times.

It was the latest to shut its doors, following the closure of the Hanbury Ballrooms which has since re-opened under new management.

Other clubs that have gone out of business recently include The Gloucester, in Gloucester Road, and Ocean Rooms, in Morley Street, while management at the Freebutt are fearful they may have to close in a row with Brighton and Hove City Council over noise levels.

It closed in 2008. I suppose that is recent in geographic terms, but it's hardly a new story.

surely this is a good sign, less idiots out on a fri and sat night binge drinking and taking up valuable police and hospital time. it also allows other people in society to venture out without having to come across so many idiots. lets hope this club becomes a something more upmarket a jazz club or something.

Dearest Bug Eye - I have never felt the need to reply to any of the ridiculous, frankly right wing at times, idiotic, Daily Mail style comments that people leave on here, until now.

I guess you have never frequented the Engine Rooms, or are familiar with the type of events that it hosts, but it was one of the most important alternative live venues that we had in Brighton.

I attended and hosted many a club night and live show there, over a period of at least five years, and not once did I ever see any trouble there, EVER. It was one of the safest, most friendly venues in Brighton.

The type of behaviour that you believe is rife in Brighton, is luckily, centralised to one, horrible, miserable street. The vast majority of 'youngsters' between the ages of 18-30, are law abiding, community aware and most importantly, employed.

Basically, you're a small minded, blinkered idiot.

Thanks.

As Wiggum says West st isn't representative of the rest of Brighton. I can't see anyone between the ages of 16 and 25 being satisfied with a jazz club either. bug eye you are wrong in saying it's a good sign, at least they were trying, you've given up.

Sometimes comments on here are so misinformed I think they are a wind up, just like i think the Argus likes to put articles about washing machines flooding flats just to annoy keyboard warriors. The engine rooms was a friendly venue, the only danger was getting cholera from visiting the toilets

The Engine Rooms was a friendly venue but was run on a shoestring by the last few owners and it showed when you were inside. Given the premium of £35000 being sought along with an annual rent of £35000 for a 6 year lease you'd need to be mad to take this on. It also needs a fortune of investment in the the sound equipment, bars and toilets if it were to start again as a venue.
With the money being asked its going to be closed for a while..........
