A student who was extradited to Greece has been allowed home.
Ben Herdman, 20, of Old Hollow, Worth, near Crawley, was flown out to Crete this week under a European Arrest Warrant. Mr Herdman and five friends had been charged with a violent assault outside a nightclub that left semi-professional footballer Rob Hughes in a coma.
The men appeared in court in Heraklion on Wednesday and were granted bail after sureties between £2,480 and £10,000 were paid.
Outside the court, Mr Herdman’s tearful mother Jackie, 54, said: “It is such an overwhelming relief. We didn't dare hope they'd get bail.”
University of Brighton student Mr Herdman denies being involved in the fight and had faced up to 12 months in jail awaiting trial. The trial is expected to be held in 2011.
