I refer to the letter titled In Good Shape (Letters, July 30) from Jean Smith. Her letter referred to the trees in the shape of a “V” planted on the South Downs Way, overlooking Plumpton racecourse.
My great-grandfather, Mr Bristow, who lived at North Common, Chailey, and his work colleagues, walked at weekends from Chailey to the Downs to clear the way and plant these trees in honour of Queen Victoria.
The “V” was also used by aircrew during the war as a landmark. When they had the V in their sights, they knew they were over the South Downs. Thank you, Jean Smith, for stirring so many family memories.
