A pub boss was ordered to pay nearly £2,000 for breaking a noise ban.

Adrian McGrory was fined yesterday for failing to keep the noise down at The Geese Have Gone Over The Water in Southover Street, Brighton.

The pub had been slapped with an order in October last year ordering it to cut out the noise of “loud amplified music” and shouting and cheering from within.

Complaints continued, though, and at about 11pm on July 2 this year a Brighton and Hove City Council noise patrol visited the bedroom of a neighbouring home, where they could hear the sound of singing and talking coming from the pub.

McGrory admitted failing to comply with a noise abatement order at Brighton Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Thurs).

Barbara Brown, defending, said he had fitted equipment to limit the volume of the stereo and had sacked one member of staff for leaving a window open because of his worry about the ban.

She said he planned to install a porch in the pub with a second door to stop noise escaping.

McGrory told the court he made only £7,500 a year from the pub despite its turnover of £240,000.

He was fined £1,084 and ordered to pay £869 costs and compensation.

After the hearing Mr McGrory said: “We take the noise hugely seriously and have done everything the council has advised us to do and more.”
