UPDATE, 5.30pm: More than 20 Smash EDO protesters have been arrested today after up to 150 took to the streets to demonstrate.

Click here to see a gallery of pictures from the protest.
The protest against the manufacture of bomb release mechanisms at the EDO/ITT factory in Moulsecoomb kicked off at about 10am in Wild Park.
Sussex Police set up a designated protest area by the A27, but very few of the protesters used this.
Instead, they made their own way through Wild Park, along Lewes Road and London Road and into the city centre, clashing occasionally with police.
Brighton and Hove Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Graham Bartlett, says: "Officers have made significant arrests this afternoon in order to prevent a further breach of the peace.
"Despite designating a highly visible site for protestors on the main road to the factory, many of them have not used it.
"Our aim today was to facilitate peaceful protest, instead many have caused disruption by failing to comply with police directions, running away through fields and woodland and being a nuisance to local people by blocking main roads in the city.
"Their disorderly behaviour has put pressure on police resources as we have needed to contain them to curb further disruption as they have blocked roads and headed towards other targets in the city.
"Injuries have been caused by protestors running around. Police medics were quickly on hand to treat one woman who ran into railings and injured her knee before an ambulance arrived."
On several occasions, officers kettled, or contained, the demonstrators. The first kettle took place at Ivy House in Wild Park early in the morning, where about 40 protesters were ordered to remove their masks before being allowed out.
Officers said they asked people to remove the masks if it was believed they were being used to conceal protesters’ identities.
More kettles took place in Wild Park at about 11am, while more protesters ran into the Moulsecoomb Estate.
Early reports the factory had closed for the day proved unfounded. However, Lewes Road, Bear Road and London Road were closed at times throughout the day, with activists at one point taking barriers from nearby roadworks to obstruct Lewes Road.
The English Nationalist Alliance also came into the city centre, where leader Bill Baker said they would be drinking and taking pictures. No trouble has been reported in relation to this presence.
By 1pm, four arrests had been made, two for suspected theft after vehicle was stopped, one for having a bladed article and one for breach of peace.
Another arrest was made shortly afterwards in relation to a dispute between protesters and residents, and there were also reports of protesters fighting amongst themselves in London Road.
Shortly before 2pm, the bulk of the protest was kettled on the Lewes Road, and police then arrested those inside one by one, all for allegedly breaching the peace if they refused to give their identity.
According to independent legal advisors, about 35 people, including on of the advisors, were arrested. However, Sussex Police said the total arrests was nearer 20. All those arrested were still being held at 5pm and police said they would be released when the risk of further breach has diminished.
At 3pm, there was a small protest outside Barclays Bank in North Street, but by 4pm, despite a small presence near the factory, the protest had largely petered out.
Officers from neighbouring forces, who are the most expensive for Sussex Police to use, had already been stood down, and the force was looking to stand down more to reduce the cost of the policing operation.

We are a democracy governed by the rule of law. Under that law we all have rights which cannot be taken away from us by any individuals or groups of individuals who seek to impose their minority and extremist views on us.
With the support of people like you we will continue to oppose the Smash Edo protestors.
By the way what was Caroline lucas saying? Has she admitted that her claim to court about the decommissioners having "clearly exhausted all democratic avenues" was a logical impossibility as they were formed for and performed one act only, the smashing up of the factory, which in no way can be described as a democratic act.

Something is seriously wrong with the dedication to their cause. Perhaps they are getting fed up with coming up against the nasty police, having their ID and details taken and placed on file forevermore. Try getting some credit now numb-skulls, you have no future.

well Kids, I have to say that possibly a bit more information is needed here.. for the record I think that 'smash - edo' are a little band of hooligans doing absolutely no good at all.. the protests are badly directed and only seem to annoy the general lpublic rather than the factory itself.. and so are pointless in the extreme... you are not freedom fighter vigilantes.. you are ill informed reactionaries with a penchant for mindless acts of violence!
anyway.. here goes nothing.. EDO MBM are part of the Raytheon group and manufacture umbelical / harnesses for aircraft defence systems and other technical parts for military / security applications.. used worldwide.. so no bomb making here! if your going to protest why not go to the top of the tree and go to harlow and bother the big boys of Raytheon? I've a fair idea why.. because Essex police are less sympathetic.. and you'd get the s*it kicked out of you by the general public who are more interested in the jobs provided by these companies rather than what they actually do.. which if they weren't doing in Brighton, they'd be doing somewhere else... it's a billion dollar industry... more worrying is the lack of interest in Thales ( http://www.thalesgro
up.com/ ) who also have a base in Brighton.. bet you didn't know that! see... when you go to various shops in this big city (including infinity foods!) when you pay.. you use a card.. in a Thales card reader.... haaa ha ha.. you might as well go to EDO and post money through the door.. oh and how many of you drive? KHI and MHI are also involved in military technology (kawasaki and mitsubishi heavy industrial) as is a few companies I have worked for.. in fact most large electronics companies will have a military department! it's big money! so..... if you are going to protest.... and this is just my two cents.. go and do it outside the government buildings of the countries who use these products.. as that will actually do some good.. if they stop using weapons there will be no market, but as things stand you are just kicking the little guy at the bottom going to work to feed his family by doing a bit of wiring / assembly... which, in the grand scheme of things does no good at all..

I’m a little confused here !!
Half of these postings appear to be complaining about SmashEDO going out of its way to make sure that none of its members were recognisable during yesterday’s protests whilst the other half seem to actually know every one of the protesters, so much so that they have intimate details about each one i.e. they are ‘unemployed’, ‘unwashed’, ‘criminals’, ‘morons’, and so the list goes on, and on, and on.
Now let me make one thing very clear and that is that I do not agree with SmashEDO or their tactics. EDO is a company that is operating within the law and is doing what a local company should do; provide local jobs for local people.
The point I am making however is that as soon as you start to introduce derogatory remarks into your counter-argument then you show an intellectual inability to understand the matrix that is used in healthy, everyday, debate and as a result your views end up on the ‘mental’ cutting-room floor. An example of this would be if I were to make the comment that “all postings should be tempered” however I know that making such a request is “akin to appealing to a higher stupidity in some cases” then I would have fallen into the same trap that I ask others to avoid.....so I won’t make any such remarks.

I know that the Smash Edo mob are a bit defensive about their failed demo because they are embarassed at the low turn out. I hear the rank and file are very unhappy with the clique at the top who run the movement, poor turn out poor tactics.
As a fellow activist I thought Id offer a few tips
1) Stop lying, you badly need to establish some credibility so just stop lying about there being an arms factory in Brighton, stop lying about it exporting to Israel, stop lying about about the police, stop lying about engaging in peaceful protest.
2) Actually engage in peaceful protest, there is an inherent contradiction in peace protestors using violence harrasment and intimidation, more people are repelled by your violence than are attracted by it.
3) Get a sense of humour and an imagination your tired old Socialist Worker Party tactics, revolution not evolution, radicalising protestors through deliberately provoking conflict with the police simply dont work, try working with the police to get the sympathy of the public and arrange a demo with some humour to it that captures the publics imagination.
Im actually free at the moment so if the rank and file of the movement want to ovethrow the leader ship who have spent 6 years getting now where Id be happy to step in to the role for a while, just let me know.

Once again you are making unqualified statements as if they are true. 1) We are not lying about these things. I was going to attend this protest last week like I have done in previous years but I'm slightly losing faith, but that's only me. I don't agree with everyone covering their faces and aggro-ing the police and damaging random property during protests. It's supposed to be a peaceful protest, yes. At the same time, people are still there to make a point, and I'm sure some of them are on benefits and some aren't. Some may not even be there for the right reason which is another reason why I don't go to every demo. At least they're standing up for what they believe in - I understand EDO are assisting our own people but at the end of the day, this war waged upon gaza is madness and even if it is only trying to stop the production of the airplane hatches that release the bombs etc, at least it's something! It's making a point towards the bigger picture. My main point was going to be that I've read some interesting comments here... but don't you think it's a shame that the published articles generally always contain nothing about the CAUSE of the demo? This article says nothing about WHY the protesters are there. All it reads is that there was a demo, it was anti-EDO and that it disrupted local activity and the local police force. Surely there should be some more information published about why these people attend these demos and what they want to achieve, and why... without being biased. So maybe that's a little too hard for the argus to achieve... That would be nice though, then people will have a little more of their own opinions on the topic and may find out something they didn't know already, ya never know! :)

There have been numerous protests about numerous things over the years, some protests have had massive support and have been running for years and years and nothing came of it. Smashing a few windows and assaulting the Police once a year will not force them to close. Just try to get realistic.
The number of people at protests goes up and down. A low turn-out does not mean lack of support or the end of a campaign. We had over 2000 around a year ago we might have 4000 next time - who knows? When 2000 turned up people didn't say "well that's it let's close the factory down as there's a lot of support for this campaign". So numbers are irrelevant. Talking to people on the street this factory is as unpopular as ever whatever the tactics of protesters. You might think that by posting such remarks you put people off but it shows how little you understand about the motivation of the group. We have stood up to massive onslaughts from the police and the legal system. If you think that the campaign is floundering because of a lowish turn-out or that this means our support is diminishing then you are deluding yourself. Maybe there will be many more big demos, maybe there won't, I have no idea, but rest assured the campaign will continue until this factory is just a bad memory.

Sorry but I can only say this so many times. Numbers will go up as well as down and have done regularly for the last six (now nearly seven) years. There are loads of reasons: how well the march was advertised, how it was advertised, where it starts, the day of the week, whether it's a working day, whether it's term-time, the weather. Many more reasons too. Simple. The 2000 turnout was a Bank Holiday Monday and started in Town on a lovely day. 150 was meeting at a small café in a field on a not great weather working Wednesday which wasn't that well advertised. So there's your reason - not excuses. You can believe what you like (and I'm sure you will) but I can only assure you (again) our campaign is by no means diminishing.

Quite frankly if 1850 less people turned up because it started in a cafe in a field on a Wednesday then that doesn't say too much for their commitment! Even the blog states that 40 of them were from a squat in town so that's only 110 who could be bothered to travel to get there. It was advertised with plenty of time so that's not really a factor is it? I knew well in advance it was happening and I don't want anything to do with it.
Oh and the weather was fine (look at the video footage!) - bit overcast but certainly not enough to put off a serious protester dedicated to their cause.

However it will show others around the UK, as it did in Derry, what ordinary people with a conscience can do to remove people who make a profit from killing in their neighbourhood.
Now that's what I call real power!

Gary wants you to say Londonderry, even though, virtually everybody on the planet calls it Derry. Hes a tit. Be patient with him.

In 1613, the city was granted a Royal Charter by King James I and the "London" prefix was added, changing the name of the city to Londonderry. While the city is more usually known as Derry, Londonderry is also used and remains the legal name.
The name "Derry" is preferred by nationalists and it is broadly used throughout Northern Ireland's Catholic community, as well as that of the Republic of Ireland, whereas many unionists prefer "Londonderry"; however in everyday conversation Derry is used by most Protestant residents of the city.
Your argument is almost as ridiculous as yourself.

So you are one of the majority that likes to post on articles in a city which you dont even live in !!! and you have the gall to say my life may be empty and boring ? get a reality check and go fix some telephone lines as there are plenty down. You are a rather boring person also. Bets are you dont have a wife or children.
Scrounging layabout? Working as a telecoms contractor in Europe, I probably pay more tax than you gross my little xenophobic nerd. Your desperate posts seem to support the notion that your life is empty and boring. You attract sympathy. Not anger. Shouldnt you be making tea for the rest of the office round about now?

Interesting thought process there. Somebody objects to actions taken by a state, that is on a par with state terrorism, and that has ignored a host of UN resolutions and some nitwits in Brighton brand you an Islamic terrorist sympathiser? No wonder the worlds fecked. Its full of stupid people.

daveinprague wrote:Thank you daveinprague for pointing out to the SAYANIM army, the difference between zionism and anti-semitism. SAYANIM used to be on Wikipedia and now removed, because of the vicious attacks and constant complaints of the SAYANIM army using the "anti semitic" excuse to keep people ignorant on the MURDEROUS ZIONISM! I bet they have even complained to Argus about me and calling me Anti semitic. For your information, there are many decent jews that are against the murderous zionist apartheid regime and campaign gainst them all the time, and the SAYANIM call them traitors, just because they do not believe in murdering people and stealing their land and calling it theirs, because it was promised to them by thier God.
What anti semetic remarks? Let me get this straight, you are saying that anti zionism is the same as anti semetism? Really? Like I said. The worlds fecked.
