A poorly pooch who needs life-saving surgery for a fatal liver condition is on the road to recovery.
Greyhound Labrador-cross Alfie, who is six months old, was abandoned four times by his owners before being taken in by the Happy Endings Animal Sanctuary in Magham Down, Hailsham, near Eastbourne.
They discovered he needed an operation for a condition called a liver shunt, which means he has a problem with his circulation system and that toxins are not cleaned.
Instead his body is flooded with its own waste products, such as ammonia, which causes sickness and can also lead to diarrhoea, fits, brain damage and neurological problems.
The Argus appealed for donations for Alfie's operation more than two weeks ago and since then Happy Endings co-owners Terry Kemp and Chris Johns have been inundated with offers of help and more than the £3,500 needed for Alfie's operation.
Mr Kemp said Alfie has also been put on a cocktail of drugs, including antibiotics, by a vet and is responding well to treatment.
