Hold-ups in Brighton after shopping street "collapse"

The scene in North Street this afternoon The scene in North Street this afternoon

A section of road in central Brighton is reported to have collapsed.

North Street has been closed eastbound and council officers have been sent to investigate the scale and cause of the problem.

Officers said the collapse may have been caused by a water main bursting because of the cold weather and thaw.

Sussex Police were called at 2.22pm today.

No traffic is being allowed downhill on North Street and buses are being diverted along Queen's Road, North Road and the seafront.

Yes, definately a problem if it's closed southbound and the road itself runs from west to east!

So much for having replaced all the old cast iron victorian pipes..

These "hold-ups": are there weapons involved, or are they more like muggings? And how are they connected to a hole in the road?

Could it be a crack in the space-time continuum? Were the road works really for a new Torchwood HQ under North Street and has it all gone badly wrong?

That was only speculation on the part of 'officers' - but can't plastic pipes burst too?

If the Argus can use the word 'southbound' of this road, then the newspaper is heading west.

I must confess I was confused! And the bus I was on came up North Street - or westbound.

A shame the whole of North Street was not swallowed. Grim, grim, grim.

undergound PE plastic pipes balloon 1st and split 2nd, the pressure required is seriously higher than will be found in any water main or high pressure gas main (houses are supplied by a low pressure gas main.
Above ground freezing can cause either the plastic fittings to fracture or simply force a badly fitted pipe to pop out.
Plastic (pe) gas and water pipes underground are generally electrically fusion welded leaving a joint as strong as the rest of the pipe.

In brighton a sewer collapse is a possibility as is a serious burst water main.
freezing of underground water pipes is being used as an excuse for poor maintainance. water mains are generally at least 90 cm/3 feet below ground level and the permafrost has not yet reached that level a week mor two of subzero tempratures is not enough to freeze flowing water deep underground.
Still a hole has apparently appeared and various people are looking into it.

What do you expect to happen to a road that has a zillion buses going up and down it all day long?

Let's not be pessimistic. Perhaps Mary Mears will nip into the conveniently placed 99p store to find something with which to fix this upheaval to the road? This is the solution usually proposed in Council agenda papers.

Some biscuits, suitably crushed, with a squirt or two from a few tubes of superglue, that should patch it up for now.

Downstairs at Churchill Square was closed at about 5.45pm too because of some fire scare or something - it opened again but when we went to pay for our ticket in the multi storey car park, a flustered young parking attendant said 'no need to pay, car park is being evacuated, barriers are all up'.

So we dove down to find the barriers down, people paying as normal, so chaos being caused by all those other drivers who had encountered the parking attendant as we all then had to get out and pay on the ground floor!

"council officers have been sent to investigate the scale and cause of the problem"

So, presumably we can expect a completely useless and inept report (in triplicate) sometime in 2019, plus ridiculous overtime claims (footed by the Council Tax payer) due to them having to actually WORK (or at least appear to do some) between Xmas and New Year?
