Two dogs died after their owner drove off with them attached to the back of a car.

Sussex Police were alerted to the incident by horrified members of the public and contacted the RSPCA.

A Sussex Police statement said: “Police were notified by members of the public about an incident in which two dogs were seen being trailed behind a silver 4x4 vehicle in the Pound Hill area of Crawley shortly after 3.30pm on Saturday.

“It is believed the Rottweiler dogs had been temporarily secured to the back of the vehicle by one owner and then the other owner drove off unaware that the dogs were there.

“One dog was found dead in the road and the other later had to be destroyed due to its injuries.”

Inspector Zahid Khan said: "This is a very tragic and distressing accident for all concerned.

“Police attended and the RSPCA were notified. Sussex Police will not be investigating the incident.”

A Sussex Police spokewoman said it would be the RSPCA's choice whether to prosecute the owners.
