A man has died of tuberculosis and 100 others will be screened for the deadly lung disease.

The homeless man, who has not been named, died earlier this month after contracting the condition.

Now staff and volunteers at the Crawley shelter, along with other members of the homeless community will be tested for the infection, which if left untreated kills 50% of its victims.

Peter Mansfield-Clarke, director of Crawley Open House in Stephenson Road, Three Bridges, Crawley, said he had been told by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) not to name the dead man.

He added: “He was very well liked by everyone here and will be missed by us all.

“At the moment we are trying to trace to see if he had any family.”

Mr Mansfield-Clarke said so far everyone at the centre felt well and were not showing any indication of having contracted the disease.
