Drivers are flouting the law after a rock star destroyed a speed camera.

According to safety experts an increasing number of motorists are putting their foot down along the A259 Kingsway in Hove where a Gatso camera was put out of action by musician Nick Cave.

The lead singer of the Bad Seeds and Grinderman caused thousands pounds of damage after his Jaguar saloon hit the camera and safety barrier in December last year.

The camera is due to be fixed by the end of February, however the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership (SSRP) has now started using mobile cameras to crack down on the increasing speeds of motorists trying to sneak past above the limit.

A spokesman for SSRP, which owns the camera said: “There has been a very definite rise in speeds.

“We can see that from the telemetry loops in the road. They are strips in the road that measure traffic flow.

“They have been showing a really significant rise in speeds down there."
