Innovative party providers Become Modern are back with a new venue, new club nights and a new creative outlet.

The Haunt – formerly the Cuckoo Club based in Pool Valley – launches on Thursday with a line-up that features DJ slots from Romy Madley Croft of The xx and Hercules & Love Affair’s Kim Ann Foxman, plus live music from Klaxons-approved psychedelics Is Tropical and local heroes Mirrors.

Passionate about great, imaginative parties, the Become Modern team have been based in Brighton since 2006. Created by an ensemble of DJs and venue managers, the collaborative talents soon became renowned for booking new and interesting acts and creating a series of club nights whose ethos was firmly rooted in fun.

“We started doing club nights because we thought there weren’t any good ones in town,” says Become Modern curator Henron. “We just wanted somewhere we could listen to music that we liked. That led on to more club nights, which has led to this new venue.”

Their passion for new music and breaking acts has been to Brighton’s advantage. The first performances in the city from acts such as Friendly Fires, La Roux and Little Boots were all thanks to Become Modern – and now the team are relishing the opportunities The Haunt provides.

“We have a really top-notch venue with top-notch facilities and it means we can put on some of the stuff we’ve not been able to put on in the past,” Henron says. Following Thursday night’s launch, Brighton’s notorious 1980s party It Is Still 1985 debuts at the venue on Saturday, February 5, and Henron forsees an exciting future for the venue.

“There is a major new night coming – it’s called Nature – which will have new music acts and a really interesting DJ playlist,” he says. “It will be a modern idea of what a party is, and completely different to anything that’s happened in Brighton before!”
