A scientist whose inventions included the suitcase on wheels and the radio microphone has died.

Reg Moores, 88, of Horton Road, Brighton, came up with many of his simple solutions to enhance his act as a professional ice skater.

Friends have paid tribute to the inventor and entertainer who was also a proud magician and champion whistler.

Family friend Pauline Hardy, 62, of Kemp Town, Brighton said: “He left his mark through serving his country and left his footprint through all his inventions.

“He was so clever and could speak numerous languages but was always interested in how things worked.

“It was great to have known him.”

John Holden, of John's Camping in London Road, Brighton, said: “He was an incredible man – always active and always looking for the next adventure or big idea.”

Mr Moores, who was a member of the Sussex Magic Circle, was married to Aggie but had no children.

On leaving the RAF he took up ice skating and was soon in many of the shows at the sports stadium in West Street, Brighton.

He won the accolade of European Whistling Champion in 1996 receiving praise from leading actor Dudley Moore.

Mr Moores was found dead at his home on Sunday.

Details of the funeral are expected to be finalised in the coming days.
