Two women have been rescued from a severe house fire.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue crews were called to the blaze at a house in Widdicombe Way in Brighton.

Both the ground and first floor were alight when crews arrived shortly after 8pm last night.

The women were pulled unconscious from the blaze by firefighters before being given oxygen therapy at the scene.

The women, who have not been named, were then taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital by ambulance.

Sussex Police said they were suffering from smoke inhalation.

Three dogs were also rescued from the fire.

A Brighton woman, 26, was arrested at the scene of the fire on suspicion of arson.

She remains in custody this morning waiting to be questioned by officers.
