A police watchdog returned to where a wanted man was shot dead by armed officers.

Yesterday a team from the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigating the death of Michael Fitzpatrick renewed their appeal for witnesses to come forward.

Exactly a week before Fitzpatrick, known by friends as Killer Mick, is believed to have pulled out a black handgun in Kemp Town and shot at Sussex Police officers, who then returned fire.

The 49-year-old was being tracked by police who suspected he was involved in a string of armed robberies and attempted robberies in Burgess Hill and Hove.

IPCC investigators stationed themselves at both ends of Rock Place, Brighton, yesterday lunchtime to ask every single member of the public who passed whether they had been in the vicinity a week before.

Colin Sparrow, deputy senior investigator for the IPCC, said: “We cannot reveal too much about the progress of ongoing investigations.

“We are still trying to find witnesses who may have been in the vicinity around about 1pm last Thursday.”

Passers-by were handed leaflets that read: “Were you in the area at that time? Did you see or hear anything that might help us with our investigation?” Anyone with any information about the incident should call 0800 0969075 or email brightonshooting@ipcc.gov.uk.
