WAY back, Dean Wareham’s Velvet Underground-inspired Galaxie 500 became the indie touchstone for a slightly hazy rock sound that lives on today through the likes of The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev.

Tonight, despite the strangely dated Old Grey Whistle Test-style visuals, time has clearly not withered Dean or his need to get up and play.

With eyes closed, it could easily have been a gang of eager teenagers on stage still fresh out of college.

Wareham’s vocals, somewhere between Lou Reed and Neil Young, may have been a little scratchy at times but his guitar was majestic, while long-time cohort, partner and bass player Britta Phillips positively glowed and drummer Jason Lawrence held everything together with amazing delicacy.

The highlight of the show was a cover of Yoko Ono’s Listen, The Snow Is Falling, with the audience tangibly held by Phillips’s frankly beautiful voice. Starting sparsely, it built into one of those blazing guitar wig-outs which, when carried out as this one was, sends shivers up the spine.

No matter that Wareham has never been one for perky banter or stage antics – the music was enough to keep the audience rapt.
