The future of the post-Pride street party is in doubt after concerns over its location.

The Village Street Party is traditionally held in St James’s Street and attracts thousands of revellers determined to carry on partying after Pride.

But after unrest over road closures and rowdy, drunken partygoers, some residents have suggested the event is moved to Madeira Drive.

Now a petition has been launched to keep the party “in the heart of the gay community”.

Chris Cooke, former chair of the Local Area Action team for St James’ Street and a Labour candidate for the Queen’s Park council seat, started the petition.

He said: “St James’s Street is the natural home for the party and it has got a great deal of support from local businesses and the community.

“The police and the council have always supported it so I don’t understand why anyone would to move it form its home.”

But Janie Thomas of the Kingscliffe Society said: “We have absolutely nothing against a street party. All we are asking is for the residents to be consulted.

“So far their views have not been taken on board."
