No police station in Sussex will be open after midnight under cost-cutting plans.

According to proposals to save £2m, Brighton Police Station in John Street, Brighton, is due to close its doors between midnight and 8am.

Members of Sussex Police Authority – which oversees the running of the force – are being asked to recommend approving the changes, which would also see the main stations in Eastbourne, Hastings, Worthing and Crawley close at 8pm rather than midnight from May.

Stations in Peacehaven, Lancing, Durrington, Petworth, Selsey, Arundel and Heathfield would close their front offices altogether, opening only by appointment.

Sussex Police – who are trying to save £52 million over the next four years – have not yet completed a consultation on station opening hours but have set a “projected” date of May 9 for changes to begin if approved.

The proposals are set out in papers coming before the authority’s neighbourhood policing scrutiny committee on Thursday, March 10.
