Concerns have been raised about the sale of alcohol at a new Marks and Spencer’s.

The company has submitted an application to Brighton and Hove City Council to sell alcohol from 8am to 11pm Monday to Saturday at its new Simply Food Store in Carden Avenue.

The application for the store, which is due to open in the spring, also asks to sell alcohol from 10am to 10.30pm on Sundays but will be restricted by legislation limiting Sunday opening hours.

The city’s Trading Standards team has raised concerns over the effect on drink-fuelled disorder among young people.

Jo Player, acting head of Trading Standards, has insisted a Challenge 25 policy is in place if the licence is approved, meaning all customers will be asked to prove their age if they look under 25.

Sussex Police has also asked for age checks, training for staff in age-restricted sale and CCTV to be installed.

The licence will be considered by the council’s licensing committee later this month.
