RATHER than “falling at the first fence” (The Argus, March 5), it was Labour and not the Green Party that finally helped ensure an additional £2.5m went back into essential services such as bus routes, Connexions youth guidance, elderly care and schools – rather than being wasted by the Conservatives on the removal of a cycle lane and a miniscule council tax decrease of 25p per week.

We were genuine in our desire to see these services protected and we ensured that they were without supporting any of the Tory cuts.

We now have a set budget that is still far from perfect but is a bit fairer than it was and, if elected to run the council in May, Labour councillors will act swiftly to repair the rest of the damage and further protect jobs and public services.
