A university has reported alleged prostitution on its campus to police.

The University of Sussex called Sussex Police after it was tipped off that a one-bedroom flat was being used as a brothel.

Two adverts were posted on an internet escort site apparently offering sex services at the university's site at Falmer.

One advert is from a 21-year-old woman calling herself Sylvy, who says: "Come now to University of Sussex in Falmer. Easy to park."

Another is from a woman calling herself Rosie, giving her age as 37 and her location as "side of University of Sussex in Falmer-Brighton".

They also offered to provide services together.

Neither of the numbers they gave were answered yesterday.

Though brothel-keeping is illegal, prostitution in itself is not against the law.

Sussex Police confirmed they visited a one-bedroom flat yesterday morning (Tues) after a call from university security staff.

They said: “A woman in her twenties who is not a student or University employee was there. There is no evidence of any criminal offence being committed.”

The university is now considering whether to take any action against the tenant of the flat.

A spokeswoman said: "The university campus is a safe and secure environment, and we are very concerned by the allegation that one of our one-bedroom flats on campus has been used as a brothel.

"There is no suggestion that any student here was working as a prostitute.

"We have immediately referred the matter to the police since it is potentially a criminal matter.

"As far as we are aware, this is the first time that any such allegation has been made in relation to university accommodation."
