ON MARCH 9, Brighton’s MP Caroline Lucas seconded an early day motion (EDM1565) in the House of Commons demanding there should be no external military intervention in Libya.

Since then, Colonel Gaddafi’s army has attempted to take the city of Benghazi, using tanks and heavy artillery against the civilian population there. However, they were rebuffed by French military planes.

In a speech just before the UN resolution authorising the no-fly zone and “all means necessary”, Gaddafi told Benghazi’s inhabitants that his army would go from “house to house” seeking retribution and stated that “from tomorrow, you will only find ‘our people’ there, (because we will) all go out and cleanse the city of Benghazi”.

Given these subsequent events, does Dr Lucas remain proud of her principled stand?
