A canoeist saved the life of a man whose rowing boat had capsized.

The 65-year-old man from Lancing was rescued by a Shoreham Lifeboat from the River Adur at Shoreham after the passing canoeist had raised the alarm and helped the man onto a moored boat in the middle of the river.

The capsized man was freezing cold, complaining of chest pains and exhausted from swimming in the fast ebbing water for at least 20 minutes when he was rescued at around 2.45pm yesterday.

He was taken to Worthing Hospital for treatment.
