The Cartoon Network might not necessarily be the obvious domain for a dance DJ of international renown, but then again, Diplo is no obvious DJ.

He has recently joined forces with DJ Switch on a new, futuristic dancehall and reggae side-project called Major Lazer – a project whose visuals are based around the exploits of a Jamaican militant at war with an evil army of zombies, mummies and vampires. With Major Lazer soon to be transformed into a new cartoon series by animation company Adult Swim, it seems the DJ is keen to stick his finger in another creative pie.

“No way was this all part of the master plan,” he laughs. “The whole Adult Swim team is involved so I think it will be a fun ride – plus it’s a good lead up to album number two, which is going to be f****** CRAZY!”

Diplo, aka Wesley Pentz, is clearly not one to confine himself to one genre or medium. Taking his stage name from his favourite dinosaur, his love of Miami bass, seminal Bronx DJ Bambaataa and early releases from record labels Slip-N-Slide, No Limit and Cash Money saw the Mississippi-born DJ release his debut album Florida in 2004 to rave reviews throughout the underground community.

Partnering up with M.I.A. to produce the mixtape Piracy Funds Terrorism, a slew of “big name” remix projects surfaced, with Diplo becoming sought after by the likes of DJ Shadow, Radiohead and Gwen Stefani. Earning himself a Grammy nomination for his work on M.I.A.’s Paper Planes, the DJ founded Mad Decent Records and began producing for artists such as Santigold and Missy Elliot, before returning to his love of baile funk and directing his debut film Favela On Blast that explored the Brazilian slums of Rio de Janeiro and the unique music scene that exists there.

Promising to play everything from High Rankin, Mumdance and Lvis during his Brighton set, it’s tricky to guess where Diplo will end up next – with differing projects and businesses all vying for his attention.

“I’m trying to squeeze a little more out of producing before I go full ‘talent scout’ and ‘label owner’,” he says. “For now, expect more of the same… but with other people’s money.”
