Unfit police should be thrown out of their force, according to a senior Sussex officer.

Chief Inspector Dick Coates, of Sussex Police, has said too many of his colleagues are kept on in backroom jobs because they are unfit for frontline duty.

His remarks have caused controversy at a time when the force has said it must lose 500 officers.

Officers who are discharged from the force on medical grounds can get an extra three years added to their pensionable service and access their pensions immediately.
