The amount of money owed to Sussex Police has risen despite the force battling to balance its books.
Individuals, companies and organisations owe the force £2.8 million - £1.2 million more than at the same time last year.
It emerged as senior officers prepared to cut police station opening hours across the county to save money.
Officers are also being offered early retirement to reduce the force wage bill and a recruitment freeze is in place.
