This cabaret performance takes its title from two of the many hit shows written by Broadway legends John Kander and Fred Ebb: Kiss Of The Spider Woman and Flora – The Red Menace.
Melody La Rouge paid tribute to these geniuses of musical theatre with a programme that contained 14 songs from a wide range of their work. As writers they have often been bold in their choice of subject matter – decadent Berlin in Nazi Germany for Cabaret, Death Row for Chicago and a South American prison is the setting for Spiderwoman.
Ms La Rouge is not only a talented singer but is also adept at using her acting talents to heighten each song with the necessary emotional requirements. Every song was acted as well as sung. She also has the ability to echo the personality of some of the original artists – Minnelli, Streisand and Rivera.
A small performing area with only a pre-recorded piano accompaniment did not prevent her from putting over the big numbers full throttle. Sadly her sensitive renditions of Maybe Next Time and A Quiet Thing were overpowered by the piano.
Her performance, as the song has it, made coming to the cabaret very much worthwhile.
