Councillor Geoffrey Theobald has been elected the new leader of the Tory party for Brighton and Hove.

The former cabinet member for transport and environment succeeded Mary Mears at a meeting held by the Conservative party last night.

It marks a change of direction for the party which has run the city council for the last four years before being defeated by the Greens at last week's election.

The Tories 18 councillors, who will form the official opposition to the Greens (23 seats) when the new council is formed, made their decision in a secret ballot at its annual general meeting.

The Labour group (13 seats) will decide on their leader tonight.
