The Argus: fringe_2011_logo_red_thumbArthur Miller's play that questions the ethics of war profiteering has been described as an Ibsenian drama. It also bears the inevitability of a Greek tragedy, with a family doomed to be torn apart.

Successful businessman Joe Keller knowingly allows defective aircraft parts to be supplied during World War Two, resulting in 21 dead pilots. Released through lack of evidence he lets his partner take the blame and receive a prison sentence. Three years later the truth unravels with tragic consequences.

Miller’s emotionally gut-wrenching writing requires performances to match and James Newton’s sensitive direction inspires his entire cast to perfection.

Based on the company’s previous Miller productions the anticipation was of good acting but what is delivered reaches beyond the level of excellence.

Tim Blissett slips into the role of Keller as though tailor-made – all the bluff heartiness of the self-made man – whilst Lyn Fernee, as his wife, is a glorious mixture of neurotic helplessness and steely resolve. Equally magnificent are Mathew Lawson and Emily Gallichan. A must-see production.
