The Argus: fringe_2011_logo_red_thumbOnce a history tutor at Boundstone Community College, Andy Thomas is now a comic and writer, but teaching has clearly left a psychological mark.

Boundstone Lane follows Thomas’s teaching-based show of last year’s Fringe, which saw him visited by Kenneth Williams’ ghost. This year’s act is no less surreal. set in a Lancing courtroom, Thomas faces unusual charges, including ruining a talent night, impersonating Dr Dre and mocking those with special needs.

Thomas proceeds to explain himself – mostly through song. A mysterious musical compulsion sees him perform inspired takes on songs by Shakira, Katy Perry and Rihanna, whose Rude Boy becomes an unforgettable vocab lesson.

The show is packed with witty lines and references to teaching and life in Lancing, without excluding those lacking experience of either. Thomas is a great performer (if not a natural singer) and, as he dashes around manically, glasses sliding down his nose, neatly encapsulates the frustrated educator kids just love to wind up.

A few references to “pikeys” and “chavs” should be dropped, but an entertainingly bizarre denouement rounds off an ambitious, wonderfully funny performance.
