A re-examination of a £750 million budget will be the first act of the country's only Green-led council.

In what was a statement of intent, the soon-to-be-formed Green administration yesterday asked key groups to join them in reviewing £23 million of cuts to Brighton and Hove City Council's financial plans for the coming year.

The controversial proposal to reopen the balance books comes two months after the former Tory-led local authority legally agreed and ratified how to spend its annual income.

It could see the newly-formed Green cabinet set an emergency budget and propose a raft of alterations to the way services for more than 260,000 residents are funded.
