I’M WRITING to you in relation to a recent article in the South Coast Leader (April 14) concerning the Newhaven Incinerator.
This photo was taken from within the boundary of the South Downs National Park, looking across to the South Downs hills just south of Itford Hill.
Is this view one that Peter Jones, leader of East Sussex County Council, is proud of?
An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Not any longer – it’s spoilt by this hideous incinerator, the front end of which is reminiscent of a war-time German Dornier bomber. This could be quite offensive and upsetting to some elderly residents of Newhaven and the surrounding area, I’m sure.
But now it’s there, at least its impact could be softened by painting it a dark green. That might then assist with merging it into a natural background.
Even a recent visitor from Oxfordshire commented: “What is that monstrosity at Newhaven one sees from Lewes?”
Other visitors too, have also made similar comments when approaching Newhaven from other directions.
This thing well and truly puts Newhaven on the map – but not for the best of reasons.
