Fashion-conscious schoolboys have been told off for wearing skinny-fit trousers to class.

The lads have also been warned off wearing trousers which are “tapered below the knee”.

It is believed this is the first time boys have been warned about their uniform at a secondary school in Sussex.

However female pupils at other schools have in the past been told not to wear trousers which are too tight or skirts that are too short.

The warning was issued in a letter to the pupils of parents at Downlands Community School in Dale Avenue, Hassocks.

It said: “A small number of boys have also worn trousers that are tapered below the knee or ‘skinny’ fit or jean style with rear patch pockets.

“These are unacceptable as they are a fashion trend and again not standard uniform trousers. Trousers should be “straight leg” with no tapering below the knee with a rear concealed pocket and in standard uniform fabric.

“Only trousers that can be bought from our suppliers or are a match will be approved by the school.”

A school spokeswoman confirmed that some boys had been wearing a version of the uniform which was not deemed suitable, although the majority of pupils were dressed appropriately.

She said: “It is not all the boys although there are a small number of boys.

“It is a school of more than 1,000 pupils – it is such a minority.”She said the school expected its pupils to wear a suitable uniform, adding: “Most schools have a code of conduct.”
