The Argus: fringe_2011_logo_red_thumbAnyone hoping to enjoy a quiet drink in the Thistle Hotel bar on Friday night was in for a shock, as Spanish waiter Manuel charged around accosting drinkers, pursued by an enraged Basil Fawlty and his long-suffering wife Sybil.

And so began the Faulty Towers Dining Experience.

Interactive Theatre Australia served up an evening of mayhem as they brought characters from the classic BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers back to life in a unique fusion of food and fun.

From being manhandled into our seats, to watching Manuel clamber on to a nearby table to sing Y Viva España, there was no escaping the chaos.

Popular skits and jokes were played to much approval, with some brilliant improvisation on the side.

The food was almost irrelevant as pandemonium took precedence. Tomato soup to start – with basil, of course – went down well, save for the poor soul who found chef’s teeth in their bowl.

The actors proved they’ve spent considerable time studying their namesakes, as they had the characterisation down to an absolute tee – from the voicing and appearance, to the slightest mannerisms.

Even the occasional slip into an Australian accent was easily overlooked.

The TV series may have only run for 12 episodes more than 30 years ago but, as this show proves, the spirit of Fawlty Towers is alive and kicking.
