Detectives have made a renewed appeal for witnesses to a blaze at a golf club which caused hundreds of thousands of pounds of damage.

Arsonists are believed to be responsible for the fire at Tilgate Forest Golf Club in Crawley in the early hours of Sunday.

Sussex Police is working with West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to establish the exact cause of the fire.

Detective Constable Andy Wolstenholme said: “The fire completely destroyed the club house and restaurant at the golf club meaning the Crawley community has lost a popular bar.

“A small blessing is that people are still able to play golf on the course.

“We are appealing for witnesses and would like to hear from anyone who saw vehicles, people or suspicious activity in the Tilgate Park and surrounding area between 1am and 5am on Sunday.

“We would also like to hear from residents in Maidenbower who may have seen a group of people using a cut through from the Bennett Close area into the park around that time.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070999, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
